About GERD

What Is GERD (Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease)?

When Heartburn Becomes More Than an Occasional Problem

Occasional heartburn is common, but when acid reflux occurs frequently or begins interfering with daily life, it may be a sign of Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease, commonly known as GERD.

GERD develops when stomach contents repeatedly flow backward into the esophagus. This often happens when the lower esophageal sphincter, the muscle that normally helps prevent reflux, doesn't close or function properly.

For some patients, a hiatal hernia can also contribute to chronic reflux by affecting the normal position of the stomach and the barrier between the stomach and esophagus.

Over time, untreated or poorly controlled GERD can cause inflammation of the esophagus and, in some patients, complications such as esophageal narrowing or Barrett's esophagus.

Common Symptoms of GERD and Acid Reflux

  • Frequent heartburn or a burning sensation in the chest
  • Acid reflux or regurgitation after eating
  • A sour or bitter taste in the mouth
  • Difficulty swallowing
  • Chronic cough, throat irritation, or hoarseness
  • Chest discomfort associated with reflux
  • Symptoms that worsen when lying down or sleeping
  • Persistent symptoms despite acid-reducing medication

If you experience frequent heartburn or reflux symptoms, a medical evaluation can help identify the cause and determine which treatment options may be appropriate.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions About GERD & Acid Reflux Surgery

What is GERD?

GERD stands for Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease. It is a chronic condition in which stomach contents repeatedly flow backward into the esophagus, causing symptoms such as heartburn, regurgitation, and discomfort. In some patients, GERD can lead to inflammation or damage to the esophagus.

What is the difference between heartburn, acid reflux, and GERD?

Heartburn is a symptom that causes a burning sensation in the chest. Acid reflux occurs when stomach contents flow backward into the esophagus. GERD is a chronic condition involving troublesome or complicated reflux.

Can GERD be treated permanently with surgery?

Anti-reflux surgery can provide long-term relief for many appropriately selected patients, but it is not a guaranteed permanent cure. Some patients may experience recurrent symptoms or require medication or additional treatment later.

What is the most common surgery for GERD?

Fundoplication is an established surgical treatment for GERD. During the procedure, the upper part of the stomach is wrapped around the lower esophagus to strengthen the anti-reflux barrier and reduce the backward flow of stomach contents.

Can a hiatal hernia cause acid reflux?

Yes. A hiatal hernia can interfere with the normal barrier between the stomach and esophagus, allowing reflux to occur more easily. For some patients, surgical repair may be recommended. Dr. Michael Feiz and Associates also specializes in minimally invasive hiatal hernia repair, offering surgical treatment options that may help reduce acid reflux and provide long-term relief.

Can GERD develop after gastric sleeve surgery?

Yes. Some patients experience new or worsening acid reflux after gastric sleeve surgery. With extensive experience in bariatric and minimally invasive surgery, Dr. Michael Feiz and Associates understands the unique considerations involved in treating reflux following weight loss procedures. Our surgical team can evaluate your symptoms, anatomy, and medical history to determine which treatment options may be most appropriate for your condition.

How do I know if I need GERD surgery?

Surgery may be considered if you have confirmed GERD with persistent symptoms, certain complications, or a structural problem contributing to reflux. Diagnostic testing, such as endoscopy, reflux monitoring, or esophageal function testing, may be needed before surgery is recommended.

How long does recovery take after GERD surgery?

Recovery depends on the procedure and the patient's overall health. Many patients return to light activities within a few weeks following minimally invasive surgery. Temporary dietary modifications may also be necessary while healing.

Is GERD surgery covered by insurance?

Many insurance plans cover medically necessary anti-reflux surgery or hiatal hernia repair when specific criteria are met. Our team can assist with reviewing your benefits and the authorization process.

Can GERD surgery help me stop taking Prilosec or Nexium?

Some patients are able to reduce or discontinue acid-reducing medication after successful surgery. However, this depends on the individual patient, the procedure performed, and the outcome of treatment. Medication changes should always be discussed with your physician.
